Welcome!

Hello, Dr Gangrene, and welcome to Wikipedia! Thank you for your contributions. I hope you like the place and decide to stay. Here are a few good links for newcomers:

I hope you enjoy editing here and being a Wikipedian! Please sign your name on talk pages using four tildes (~~~~); this will automatically produce your name and the date. If you need help, check out Wikipedia:Where to ask a question, ask me on my talk page, or place {{helpme}} on your talk page and someone will show up shortly to answer your questions. Again, welcome!  -- Etz Haim 10:06, 27 Dec 2004 (UTC)

I recently did an overhaul on this topic, making it more general. Not particularly satisfied - think it needs a review. I noticed that you did edited this one some time ago. Is there a formal way of requesting subject matter expert review? Aymatth2 (talk) 19:25, 13 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

I noticed you added the cleanup tag to legal research, and have done some cleanup yourself on it. Thanks - I've also done some further cleanup. It's a great and interesting article, but it does need to be hacked apart and reconstructed somewhat to fit the more sparse and simplified style of Wikipedia. Good luck in your future Wikipedia contributions, if you have any questions, feel free to bug me on my Talk page. JesseW 4 July 2005 09:05 (UTC)

You might also want to create a User page - you don't have to say anything about yourself if you don't want to, but it will show up with each edit you make, and unless you want to look like a noob, a blue User page link helps. ;-) JesseW 4 July 2005 09:07 (UTC)

Dr. Gangrene, I come to you requesting assistance. I have finally given up hope on the official translation channels to get this translated from German to English. I began a quick search for a user who knows both German and English, and you also have an interest in history. So I ask that, if it is not too much, you might assist me in this. The German article is here. Please contact me if you have any questions at all. —ScouterSig 05:00, 5 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Just done. Wasn't too difficult. Dr Gangrene 11:43, 5 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, this is a message from an automated bot. A tag has been placed on Michael david winery, by another Wikipedia user, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. The tag claims that it should be speedily deleted because Michael david winery is a redirect to a non-existent page (CSD R1).

To contest the tagging and request that administrators wait before possibly deleting Michael david winery, please affix the template {{hangon}} to the page, and put a note on its talk page. Cuban artists

[edit]

Hello, Dr Gangrene ... your cleanups to articles listed in Category:Cuban contemporary artists are commendable, but what these articles really need is reliable sources to verify meeting the WP:BIO criteria ... please see Category talk:Cuban contemporary artists#Continuing deletions, and perhaps you would like to add your name to the list of editors on this fledgling project ... "Cuban artists" checklist

[edit]

OK, none of these editors

have contributed to this "Cuban artists" checklist (although there have been limited dialogs on some talk pages) ... some of them either initiated or declined PRODs, and I have asked them politely to record their actions on the checklist (like renaming/merging articles) … I mean, declining a seconded PROD without even an edit summary? What's up with that?

Well, I'm sick of playing Sisyphus and cleaning up after them, so I have deleted these articles from my watchlist, and Some Other Editor can maintain/update it … or not.

In any event, it is time for me to MOVE ON. :-)

Help to verify the article "Corruption in Ghana" for a phd-thesis

[edit]

Dear Wikipedia's,

I'm a student from Berlin and I'm currently writing my phd-thesis about governance in Ghana. I need to get an overview of the political corruption since independence together and I didn't find a better article about the topic than the one on wikipedia.

Probably you know, that I can't quote wikipedia in an phd-thesis and the sources that are at the bottom of the text aren't precisely refering to certain parts of the article.

Do you maby have information, reports, articles, just anything that is related to corruption in ghana since independence, or to the article in order to make it possible for me to refer to it in the phd-thesis?

Maby above all the people, that have contributed to the article!

It would be great, if you could help me any further.

Thanks a lot in advance,

Oxford Wikimania 2010 and Wikimedia UK v2.0 Notice

[edit]

Hi,

As a regularly contributing UK Wikipedian, we were wondering if you wanted to contribute to the Oxford bid to host the 2010 Wikimania conference. Please see here for details of how to get involved, we need all the help we can get if we are to put in a compelling bid.

We are also in the process of forming a new UK Wikimedia chapter to replace the soon to be folded old one. If you are interested in helping shape our plans, showing your support or becoming a future member or board member, please head over to the Wikimedia UK v2.0 page and let us know. We plan on holding an election in the next month to find the initial board, who will oversee the process of founding the company and accepting membership applications. They will then call an AGM to formally elect a new board who after obtaining charitable status will start the fund raising, promotion and active support for the UK Wikimedian community for which the chapter is being founded.

You may also wish to attend the next London meet-up at which both of these issues will be discussed. If you can't attend this meetup, you may want to watch Wikipedia:Meetup, for updates on future meets.

We look forward to hearing from you soon, and we send our apologies for this automated intrusion onto your talk page!

AWB

[edit]

I approved your request for using AWB. Please use the latest version found in http://toolserver.org/~awb/snapshots/ and remember that you should avoid making insignificant or inconsequential edits such as only adding or removing some white space, moving a stub tag, converting some HTML to Unicode, removing underscores from links (unless they are bad links), or something equally trivial. This is because it wastes resources and clogs up watch lists. -- Magioladitis (talk) 09:37, 9 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

An editor has nominated one or more articles which you have created or worked on, for deletion. The nominated article is Corruption in Ghana. We appreciate your contributions, but the nominator doesn't believe that the article satisfies Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion and has explained why in his/her nomination (see also Wikipedia:Notability and "What Wikipedia is not").

Your opinions on whether the article meets inclusion criteria and what should be done with the article are welcome; please participate in the discussion(s) by adding your comments to Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Corruption in Ghana. Please be sure to sign your comments with four tildes (~~~~).

You may also edit the article during the discussion to improve it but should not remove the articles for deletion template from the top of the article; such removal will not end the deletion debate.

Please note: This is an automatic notification by a bot. I have nothing to do with this article or the deletion nomination, and can't do anything about it. --Erwin85Bot (talk) 01:11, 7 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I noticed that you have revised either Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri or Sid Meier's Alien Crossfire.

I intend to revise those articles following the Wikipedia:WikiProject Video games/Article guidelines. There are more details on the discussion pages of those articles. I'd be interested in any comments you have. It would be best if your comments were on the discussion pages of the two articles.

Thank you.

Translation

[edit]

You don't need to make excuses about translation: it's extremely important to extend Wikipedia's coverage in other languages to the more widely accessed EN wiki. Your command of French, German and Luxembourgish is a considerable asset. And in any case, your lengthy, well documented Steel industry in Luxembourg is far more than mere translation. It provides an excellent historical account from a variety of sources.--Ipigott (talk) 07:53, 18 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Fortress of Luxembourg

[edit]

Thanks, Dr Gangrene, for thinking of me in connection with a peer review of this article. Let me first congratulate you on expanding it so well and for basing your improvements on a variety of interesting sources. It has certainly come a long way since you changed the title on 8 October. Rather than going into the formal review process which would normally consist of drawing up a list of problems to be addressed in bringing the article up to GA status or higher, I would prefer simply to go through it and make improvements as I go along. At first sight, in addition to copy-editing, I think the main problems are probably the lack of inline sourcing (there is a requirement for at least one reference for each paragraph) and perhaps the need for more details of the remains (and rediscovery) of the fortifications today. As a first step, I would be happy to go through the article and sort things out as I go along. I think this would be a useful exercise as it has been very much a one-man job up to now. I could then, if you wish, suggest other editors who might like to help with a peer review or simply with further improvements. Please let me know if you are happy with this approach. It may take me a day or two to look at it properly as I am involved with other work at the moment in connection with my Danish interests. By the way, I was happy to see you have included many of the historic paintings I added to Commons in connection with my coverage of Luxembourg's culture.--Ipigott (talk) 15:30, 28 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for your quick response. Glad to hear you agree to my suggestions. Thanks too for the additions on the "Remains and later use", but please add sources. I'll try to look through the article tomorrow (Tuesday the 28th).--Ipigott (talk) 20:12, 28 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I've now been through most of the article, mainly working on the prose and adding a few references where there were none before. I have compared your additions with the articles from which they have been drawn and note that in several cases they are almost word-for-word translations of the original. In order to avoid accusations of plagiarism, you might like to carry out more paraphrasing. This might also provide an opportunity to work more strictly on the chronology and avoid some of the duplication. The article would benefit from additional illustratins. The articles in Ons Stad are beautifully illustrated and I have also come across this article which is rich in illustrations. Some of the illustrations are obviously still in copyright while others are historic documents which are out of copyright and could be reused. I'm sure there must also be many other photographs out of copyright which you could use in the article. I'm still a little worried about the inclusion of the "Gibraltar of the North" in this article. It would help to provide more background on this in the body of the article. And finally, the lead now needs to reflect the main lines of the sections you have added. If I have inadvertently introduced any changes with which you disagree, just revert or edit them out. Let me know if I can be of any further help.--Ipigott (talk) 12:43, 30 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I see there are now quite a few specific suggestions on the review page. Although I seem to have fixed a few of the problems in going through the article, there are still quite a number requiring attention. For the time being, I think it would be better for me to leave these to you but would be happy to help out if you need assistance. Just let me know on my talk page.--Ipigott (talk) 11:53, 31 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]

In regard to illustrations, you could certainly add some of those from the Ons Stad articles. I believe there is a way of copying them directly from the PDF files but I don't know how to do it myself. The only way I can manage it is to print off the page in question and then rescan. But first I'll look for other sources. As for following up on the comments in the peer review, may I humbly suggest that you could have a go at them first. You may or may not agree to them and you are certainly more familiar with the sources than I am at this stage. You may also like to give some reactions on the review page, explaining how you've followed up, etc. I'll give you a few days and then see what else needs to be done. I'm glad to see the article is progressing along the right lines.--Ipigott (talk) 15:33, 31 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]

In regard to copyright, as a general rule if the author of the work has been dead for more than 70 years, his works are out of copyright. The normal practice in Commons is to work on the basis of 71 years in order to avoid complications. That means that if the author died in 1942 or before his works can be included. You can use Commons upload, selecting "It is from somewhere else" (which will bring you to this and, under licensing choose "Author died more than 70 (or 100) years ago, etc." This can apply to any work: text, paintings, photographs, maps, etc. The three images in the Ons Stad article you cite are therefore out of copyright. Don't worry too much about the copyright sign or other claims of copyright in connection with two-dimensional images. The sign is widely used incorrectly, often as a photographer wishes to protect his work but this is not valid. I would advise against the use of "Reproduction of a painting because of its age" as there can be complications. If you have any doubts, let me know.--Ipigott (talk) 13:11, 1 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Greetings! I have nominated Minette (ore) for a Did You Know listing, and was asked there to provide sources for the proposition that Minette "was deposited in the south of Luxembourg and in Lorraine in the Early Jurassic and Middle Jurassic", which is indicated in the lede, but not elsewhere in the article. Can you provide sources for this? Cheers! bd2412 T 15:07, 6 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Wikilinking

[edit]

Hi, and thanks for your work on the English Wikipedia.

I noticed an article you worked on. Just a short note to point out that we don’t normally link:

  • dates
  • years
  • commonly known geographical terms (including well-known country-names), and
  • common terms you’d look up in a dictionary (unless significantly technical).

This applies to infoboxes, too.

Thanks, and my best wishes.

Elections in Luxemburg

I'm working on a long term project on collection international election results. Template:Luxembourg elections does not contain the pre-WWI-elections, and it might be possible that you can add the missing years: I saw that you did use the book

in Antoine Pescatore. Does that book mention elections date or has lists of deputies?--Antemister (talk) 20:35, 5 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Luxembourg elections

[edit]

Hello. Thanks for your new articles on Luxembourg elections. Do you know if they took place every three years as scheduled from 1848 until 1914? If so, we can add the entire list of missing ones to the template, rather than adding them one-by-one as you create the articles. Cheers, Number 57 09:11, 6 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks!
Sadly I do not know that. In principle (from what I've read) they were meant to be every 3 years. However there might have been an early election some year for political reasons or something. However, my knowledge of Luxembourgish political history isn't good enough to know that ... Tbh I'm working my way through the sources (newspapers) every 3 years, so was intending to just add them like that Dr Gangrene (talk) 22:38, 6 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Good work on the continued stream of articles! Just to let you know, you only need to write out a note once if you are using note names to repeat them (see this diff for how the code looks). Cheers, Number 57 13:44, 6 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. An automated process has detected that when you recently edited Limpertsberg, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Lycée Robert Schuman. Such links are usually incorrect, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of unrelated topics with similar titles. (Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.)

Autopatrolled granted

[edit]

Hi Dr Gangrene, I just wanted to let you know that I have added the autopatrolled user right to your account. This means that pages you create will automatically be marked as 'reviewed', and no longer appear in the new pages feed. Autopatrolled is assigned to prolific creators of articles, where those articles do not require further review, and may have been requested on your behalf by someone else. It doesn't affect how you edit; it is used only to manage the workload of new page patrollers.

Since the articles you create will no longer be systematically reviewed by other editors, it is important that you maintain the high standard you have achieved so far in all your future creations. Please also try to remember to add relevant WikiProject templates, stub tags, categories, and incoming links to them, if you aren't already in the habit; user scripts such as Rater and StubSorter can help with this. As you have already shown that you have a strong grasp of Wikipedia's core content policies, you might also consider volunteering to become a new page patroller yourself, helping to uphold the project's standards and encourage other good faith article writers.

Feel free to leave me a message if you have any questions. Happy editing! —Tom Morris (talk) 18:13, 18 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Invitation to participate in a research

[edit]

Hello,

The Wikimedia Foundation is conducting a survey of Wikipedians to better understand what draws administrators to contribute to Wikipedia, and what affects administrator retention. We will use this research to improve experiences for Wikipedians, and address common problems and needs. We have identified you as a good candidate for this research, and would greatly appreciate your participation in this anonymous survey.

You do not have to be an Administrator to participate.

The survey should take around 10-15 minutes to complete. You may read more about the study on its Meta page and view its privacy statement .

Please find our contact on the project Meta page if you have any questions or concerns.

Kind Regards,

WMF Research Team
